Fire marks came into use in England after the great London fire of 1666 when the first fire-insurance companies were formed.

Mindful that few streets were named and the buildings were not numbered, some form of identification was necessary, and the birth of the fire mark came about.

They bore the logo of the insurance company, and the emblems that were attached to buildings by the insurance company. This practice spread to America, including New Orleans.

Fire marks stood as a guarantee to all volunteer fire departments that the insurance company would handsomely reward the brigade that extinquished the blaze. This practice carried on for two hundred and fifty years.
